Why is 1950s fashion still so popular?

In February 1947, Christian Dior’s “New Look” collection appeared on Paris runways and fashion was changed forever. To this day, Dior is acclaimed for his unique vision, elegance, and timeless femininity.

75 years later, Dior’s classic look of the nipped-in waist, full-skirts and emphasis on the bust is considered timeless and still resonates with many women who love to look stylish and feel beautiful no matter their body shape.

"I wanted my dresses to be 'constructed', moulded on the curves of the female body whose contours they would stylise. I accentuated the waist, the volume of the hips, emphasised the bust, in order to give my designs more hold, I had nearly all the fabrics lined with percale or taffeta, renewing a tradition that had long been abandoned." Christian Dior

The 1950s were a time of prosperity and post-World War II austerity measures, clothes rationing, and material shortages were a thing of the past and fashion exploded with pencil skirts (introduced by Dior in 1954), poodle skirts, gingham, and polka dot fabrics.

Cropped sweaters and cardigans helped to accentuate the waist and many emulated famous TV, magazine and movie stars with their exaggerated hourglass silhouette. Popular music and film stars had a major influence on 1950s hairstyles and fashion and the “American-look” spread throughout the world.

Petticoats were revived by Dior and were a large part of his “New Look” and are a must have for vintage-inspired 50s looks today. They provide the volume in dresses and skirts to enhance the hourglass shape and come in many colours.

The 1950s fashion style continues to be strong influence in modern fashion with many fashion icons such as Katy Perry embracing retro-reproduction brands using these same silhouettes and fabric patterns.
